JD Looking Glass: Backlight Presets

Instantly balance and add fine-art tones to your backlit portraits and landscape shots. These presets are particularly useful for correcting details lost in shadow, balancing underexposed shots, and bringing back skies without time-consuming exposure blends. Each preset has been carefully calibrated to ensure good skin tones for portrait photographers. Start subtle and build upon your favorite tones with the Toolkit Presets ($19 value, included free with the pack) to add impact, detail, and make basic corrections in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw.

JD Looking Glass: Backlight

Each Looking Glass Set includes presets for BOTH Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw, as well as actions for use within Photoshop Creative Cloud, allowing users to use a variety of application programs. Because each of these programs function differently, some presets/actions may be found in slightly different areas. Please see the list below. All tones and toolkit adjustments are consistent from application program to program (for example, the tones and contrast in “Antique” look the same in LR, ACR and Photoshop). Please note, these actions will only work in Photoshop CC if you first install the ACR presets.

About the Presets

If I buy the bundle, am I buying different presets or same presets but each set for a different program?

There are 21 different presets in each pack (well, technically, 22 in Backlight) and they work differently. Backlight is “stronger” in balancing the exposure for backlight work with underexposure on the skin tones to retain detail (which is how I tend to shoot backlight), Warm has warm tones, Cool has different cool tones. There is ZERO duplication in those 21 presets from pack to pack.
Each set ALSO includes a toolkit of different preset adjustments (contrast changes, vignettes, reducing noise, etc). Now, the BONUS TOOLKITS are the exact same from pack to pack and work with all the sets to help you customize your image or add details, if you so choose. They basically allow you to have same tones with different “finishing” looks. Then, unlike some vendors, I don’t make you re-purchase the same presets for different application programs. So if you like to use LR on some stuff but PS CC on others, you have that option with these, you need not repurchase. So many are using CC now and a lot of us like to flow between the 3 programs — or may want to have that flexibility in the future — so I’m including multiple ways to use the same presets.

Lightroom

I'm on a Mac and I can't find the Library folder. What should I do?

If you can’t find the Library, hold the Option key down while selecting the Go menu in Finder, and it should appear.

The preset tones are overriding the Tookit contrasts. What can I do?

This behavior is completely normal. We suggest you choose your preset tones first, then choose your favorite Toolkit contrast.

What does the Undo Everything preset in the Toolkit palette do?

The Undo Everything preset removes everything except for crops, clones etc.

How do I export to Photoshop?

To export to Photoshop, select the tab “Photo” in your Lightroom Menu, then “Edit in” and “Edit in Photoshop”.

Adobe Camera Raw

I'm on a Mac and I cannot find the Settings folder inside Camera Raw. Why is that?

This happens because you are browsing the root level Library of Mac OS, not the User Library (which is the one you need).

~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings

On newer Macs the User Library is hidden by default; an easy way to get there is to click on your desktop, then click on the Go menu, hold down the Option key and click on Library.

Another option is to click on your Name in the Finder Sidebar under Favorites, click on the View menu, click Show View Options and then check Show Library Folder (this way you’ll always be able to see your User Library in Finder)

To see your User Name in the Finder Sidebar, click on your desktop, click on the Finder menu, click on Preferences and under Sidebar>Favorites, check your User Name.

I'm on a Windows computer and I can't find the AppData folder. What should I do?

If you can’t find the AppData folder, make it visible by simply clicking the View tab and ticking “Hidden items” (Windows 10 or 8).

On Windows 7 or earlier, select Organize > Folders and search options, click on the View tab, then scroll till you see the Show hidden files, folders and drives option. Apply and click the OK button.

Will these work in CS5?

All of the ACR presets will work in CS5+. You need PS CC if you want to bypass ACR and stay in the PS world only. But with CS5+ you will have all the tones and adjustments, you just can’t use the actions to “call” the presets. You have to use ACR in the “normal/traditional” way for presets.

Photoshop CC

The actions I have installed do not work. Did I do something wrong?

In order for the actions to work, you must install the ACR presets first, following the instructions contained in the PDF Tutorial. Make sure to read the troubleshooting section for ACR if you have any problems installing them.

Are these actions in Photoshop CC like your other actions?

The PS CC actions work as actions, but they create a single layer that represents the preset. This is handy in that you can blend, lower the opacity, mask or compare preset effects, but it’s not like my traditional actions because it is triggering a preset file. Please see the ACR + PS CC demo video I posted and you can see exactly what I’m talking about.

My antivirus/firewall says the .zip folder that contains the product(s) has a virus. What do I do?

We assure you our products contain no virus, spyware or malware of any kind. Thus said, if your antivirus or firewall is suggesting the .zip folder might be a risky download (we are aware of a false positive generated by McAfee Antivirus, for instance), simply click “accept the risk” (or similar) to go past this protection. Only in case this step is not enough, try disabling your firewall/antivirus for 5/10 minutes, an amount of time which (depending on your internet connection) should be sufficient to download your products.
